BIG ANNOUNCEMENT – watch out for our Christmas music video

Tomorrow the Alternotives will be releasing their first ever live action music video! I’m Oscar, a new Alt and the director of the upcoming feature. The arrangement is a mashup of Christmas songs which has become an Alts staple, arranged a few years ago by Jessie Reeves. You’ll get to see Natalie singing Mariah, Hugh crooning the Pogues and even me attempting some Lennon. It’s been a very busy three weeks – we’ve filmed all over Oxford – St John’s and Magdalen colleges, Broad Street, and even Debenhams (who thankfully didn’t kick us out) and have collected over an hour of footage – a lot for a 4 minute video right?! Thankfully, Zoe Carmichael (producer) and Alice Robinson (creative manager) were completely on top of the logistics meaning for the most part, everything went smoothly and I can’t thank them enough. In the middle of all that filming, on a chilly Sunday morning, we also got together with Jacob Ewens to record the track. It took some intense rehearsing, but eventually we were ready for Jacob to work his magic; the result is a live recording with a little finessing, so that the sound is pretty similar to an alternotives performance. After that, all we needed was some post-production work, and we were good to go… keep following the Alternotives blog, Facebook and Twitter to see the result!

In other Alts news, one of our new members Teddy Chow sadly has to leave us to return to Princeton! It’s a massive shame to see him go, but Teddy’s original American a cappella group, The Princeton Footnotes, probably want him back. We recently discovered he is also a talented dancer and last week a few of us went to see him in a show called Proximity, which was absolutely breath-taking. We’ll really miss Teddy, but hope to see him again in Easter 2016 on our US Tour – until then we’ll just have to re-watch the video over and over again to pretend his intense soloing is still with us.

Anyway, much love from the alts, and we hope you enjoy the video!

A new year: Auditions

Hey Alternotives fans, I’m Alice, co-prez of the 2015/16 Alts! Being president is surprisingly fun, especially as I get to share all the responsibilities with my lovely first soprano buddy Natalie. Working on challenges for initiations and trying to source dresses and outfits are just some of the fun tasks we’ve been dealing with the past few weeks.

However, AUDITIONS are really what we’ve been stressing out about during the first few weeks of term; we lost nine amazing members this year – luckily our fab beatboxer Tom is staying on (for any non-acapella-ers out there; beatboxers are the hardest people to source. And if you’re hoping to get into acapella, learn to beatbox and people will love you forever, I swear).

With a table at freshers fair, and Facebook events and statuses galore we certainly weren’t short of applicants;  over a hundred people signed up for just eight spots. With every audition taking around ten minutes, you can imagine this was not a short process… In fact, it took Nat, James and I five days to see everyone (with some help from the old Alts of course). We saw lots of amazing solos, met some incredibly musical people, and even witnessed a bit of dancing! During this James somehow managed to run a half marathon in an almost professional time and Nat and I ordered a helluva lot of GBK to the audition room.

After the auditions, we had the difficult task of narrowing the singers down to around 30 for callbacks. This is the final step in the audition process – a group session in which – after some, hopefully relaxing, warm-ups – we set the singers one of our arrangements to learn and sing with a small set of people. I have never heard It’s Raining Men sung quite so many times. Once everyone had sung a solo piece, it was decision time for us!

Callbacks

It took us 2 hours to decide which auditionees were to become fully-fledged Alts. Everyone had been given a callback because they’re really good singers, so it’s insanely hard to decide on a final group. The girls were particularly strong this year and, to make it even more difficult, we had to work with the other Oxford a cappella groups to decide who got who.

BUT after all that, and sending out personal emails to every single auditionee, we got our final lovely eight:
Rosie Richards, Sara Lee, Miriam Adler, Camilla Dunhill, Shan Chang, Oscar Darwin, Teddy Chow and Hugh Cross.

Check out our facebook page to see more about them, and keep checking the Alts website for a blog by one of them very soon!

2014-15: What have we been up to?

The last year has been a huge success for the Alternotives. The group’s continued to sing a whole range of exciting and original arrangements, from Rihanna to Kate Bush and Hozier. We’ve had great fun performing all around Oxford, at events from the Ashmolean’s festive Light Night in November to Wadham’s Music Festival ‘Wadstock’ in May. 5 intense days of ‘boot camp’, perfecting arrangements and choreography, ended with a charity concert at Rockingham Castle, which raised over £2,000 for Homestart. August saw yet another fantastic run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival where we performed for over 2000 people over 17 days. We were even caught on camera for the BBC Breakfast Show. We got amazing responses from our audiences, and great reviews of our show:

The Oxford Alternotives want you!

The Oxford Alternotives, Oxford’s award-winning mixed a cappella group, are holding auditions for all singers for this coming year! We’re incredibly excited about this coming year; the group will be recording a brand new album as well as going on tour around Europe. We’ll also be back up to Edinburgh in the summer to continue our highly successful run at the fringe festival.

Auditions will be held in the Keble music room on the 11th and 12th of October. Simply email theoxfordalts@gmail.com for a slot or if you have any questions!
